Parasites in Humans

What is the most important thing that you need to know about parasites in humans? Two things. They can be hard to diagnose and they can make you feel ill...from a general unidentifiable malaise to seriously sick. How does something like "profound anaemia" sound? Scary. Parasites in humans may also be indicative of a weakened immune system. For some reason, people who are sick with say Crohns or HIV are more apt to be infected by parasites. Parasites in humans occur when parts of the body are in a condition that is most suitable for parasites. An impacted colon, for example, is the perfect environment for parasites to thrive.

Parasites are designed to leech off their host. It means that they will take from you what they need to survive and they will try to do this without killing you. If you are a parasite, killing your host is not a good survival tactic.

Consider the hookworm, an insidious parasite in humans. It sucks your blood from your intestinal wall. If a hookworm can stick around long enough it will make you anaemic and extremely ill. Hookworms used to be limited to certain geographical areas but they are now well established all around the world and it is estimated that over 1 billion hookworm infections occur annually.
